A fully escorted English language guided walking tour of the monuments of Ancient Rome with special visits to some unusual (and rarely visited) underground areas of the city; the tour last roughly 6 hours and there's 90 minutes of free time (for lunch) in the middle of the tour.
This is an exploration of the true essence of ancient Rome, the areas where the notion of 'Roma Caput Mundi' (Rome, head of the world) was born and nurtured, a trip back (and down) through time to a hidden world.

The tour begins at 09.30 in the morning and runs on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The cost includes all entrance tickets (no need to queue), the qualified local tour guide, and headsets where necessary. The only thing not covered is the cost of lunch which you'll have free time to arrange for yourselves.

Some images from sights on the ancient Rome and underground tour

The tour begins with a visit to the church of San Pietro in Vincoli - Saint Peter in Chains - to admire Michelangelo's statue of Moses, completed in 1515 and forming the centrepiece of the funeral monument to Pope Julius II. The next stop is the Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano, but en route there'll be a look at the remains of the thermal baths of Trajan and those of the Ludus Magnus, the gladiator school.

At the church of Saint Clement you'll explore the various underground levels including the mithraeum, a sanctuary of the cult of Mithras, with its altar portraying Mithra slaying a bull. After this it's back overground and onwards to the complex of underground Roman houses at the Caelian Hill (Monte Celio, one of Rome's famous 7 hills). Here you can admire some impressively restored frescoes that decorate the walls of what was once a rather grand Roman villa of the 2nd century, subsequently built over and lost for centuries.

After the pause for lunch the second part of the tour is an itinerary of Rome's heavy-hitters, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Trajan market and up to the Capitoline Hill with it's picture-postcard views, before ending the tour in Piazza del Campidoglio. Such a rattling cataloguing of these incredible places hardly does them justice, but you don't really need yet another description of these marvels of Ancient Rome. Suffice it to say that your guide will give you insights and understandings that a casual visit will not bring, and that at each place you'll have a fast-track admittance.
