How to join a full day excursion from Florence to Siena, Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza, wine tasting included.
This is a full day tour that heads off from Florence in the morning, first to explore Siena and then on to Montalcino, Montepulciano and last of all Pienza, before returning to Florence. Along the way there'll be wine tastings, cheese tastings and a chance to try the traditional dessert cakes of Siena.
The excursion leaves Florence at 08.30 in the morning and lasts around 11 hours; the tour runs from the beginning of April until the end of October, on Thursdays and Saturdays.
It's of course a given that you can base yourselves in Florence, pass all of your time there and still return home knowing that there's much that you haven't seen. But we'd nonetheless suggest that you'll have missed even more should you return home having not seen some of the smaller towns and wonderful countryside of Tuscany. Step forward, then, this tour of some rightly famous medieval towns of Tuscany.
First stop is Siena where you'll have some free time to explore the steep medieval streets, breathtaking cathedral as well as the impressive Town Hall and the famous Piazza del Campo, the site of the annual Palio horse races. There's also a chance to taste the famous sweet cakes/biscuits from Siena, Ricciarelli and Panforte.
Next comes Montalcino, the splendid hilltop medieval town and fortress, home of the famous red wine Brunello di Montalcino, where there'll be a wine tasting and light snacks.
Then it's on to another picture-perfect hilltop town, Montepulciano, home of one of the oldest wines in Italy, the Vino Nobile, the 'Noble wine'. Last stop before heading back to Florence is Pienza, another camera workout, and famous for the sheep's milk cheese Pecorino, which you'll taste at a traditional local merchant.
