Sala a Croce Greca
The Sala a Croce Greca (Room at the Greek Cross) is part of the
Museo Pio-Clementino, one of the Vatican Museums.
The room houses a statue of the young Octavian, and a mosaic of the
Cnidian Venus (a copy of the original masterpiece). But the centerpiece
of the Sala a Croce Greca are the huge porphyry sarcophagi of Saints
Helena and Costantina (respectively the mother and daughter of Constantine
the Great). Pope Pius VI (1717-1775) spent some half million lire,
an enormous sum at the time, bringing the two stone coffins to the
museum, and having them repaired.
