**** Update, late monday ****

Having spent a large part of today trying to find some way of not making this situation worse than it already is, there is some slightly better news.
For most Florence museums (Uffizi, David at the Accademia, Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, the Bargello, the Medici Chapel and the Brancacci Chapel), provided that we have been given notice of your cancellation with at least 48 hours notice, we can issue you with a full credit note, valid until the end of the year. In other words, you will be able to use the money you paid for the cancelled booking to put towards another booking. As explained below, we cannot offer refunds as the museums themselves will not issue us with a refund.

The same applies for the Accademia Gallery in Venice.

The same applies for the Colosseum in Rome.

For the Last Supper, things are more complicated, and we're still trying to refine various issues, but broadly speaking, we will be able to issue you a credit note (to be used for a future booking) provided you give us notice of cancellation at least 72 hours before your due visit.

The bitterest pill may well turn out to be the Vatican. For now, if you contact us before your due visit date, we can modify your booking with a new date. However, due to Vatican policy, at time of writing you cannot select a 'new' visit date after the middle of June.
We have not been able to get any acknowledgement from them at all today, and we are not holding our breath for good news. We shall try again tomorrow, Tuesday the 20th. At the moment their own site states bluntly that 'there will be no refunds'. Watch this space.

Although we have always had our terms and conditions on show, we are adding this page (April 2010) in response to the inevitable rise in refund requests as a result of the Icelandic volcano situation.

Point one of our terms and conditions reads '1. Once the form has been submitted I understand that no refunds are possible.'

On our FAQ we say the following:

What is your cancellation policy?
If we have confirmed your order request then from that moment on no refund will be possible. This stance is forced on us by the various local, regional and national authorities - as they offer no refunds once we have placed an order, we in turn cannot offer you a refund.

At time of writing there has been absolutely no softening of this stance on behalf of the various Italian authorities that we work with, much to our regret. Neither are we able to place another order for a future date, nor issue a credit note - that is not an option they offer. If we place a new order on behalf of someone who was unable to use their initial ticket, we are charged in full again.
It goes without saying that we would find ourselves in dire straits were we to refund customers without equivalent refunds from our 'suppliers'.

Travel insurance

We are, it goes without saying, willing to produce any documentation that you may require in order to pursue a claim with either your travel insurance provider or credit card company.

If the situation changes?

We appreciate that this must seem like rubbing salt into the wound and we fully share your frustrations; we shall of course contact you should the authorities here adopt a slightly more humane approach. And again, please accept our apologies for this regrettable situation.
