Uffizzi Gallery, Florence, May - September 2009 - 'Splendour and Reason', art in 18th century Florence
An exhibition aimed at demonstrating that Florence continued to shine as capital of culture and art even after the fall of the Medici dynasty, 'Splendour and Reason' (art in 18th century Florence) covers 120 pieces spanning the whole century, and amply demonstrates the changes in taste from late Baroque to Neoclassicism.
Peter Leopold of Lorraine picked up the Baton from the Medici, in doing so bringing the European version of Rococo and Neoclassicism to Florence. As Grand Duke he proved to be a fine protector of the arts, inspiring and stimulating workshops across the city. The reformist spirit of the Enlightenment bought with it a new wave of wealthy patrons (resident foreigners amongst them), and Florence became a mandatory stop on the 'Grand Tour'.
The exhibition features paintings, sculptures, 'objets' and furnishings, and runs at the Uffizi Gallery from May until September 2009.
